Time is a construct. Time is a magazine. Time is what happens when nothing else does. Time is what happened when you arrived in April of 2025 and said, "Where the **** is the year going?"

I visited Japan last week, and I felt like I was living in the future - not because of the tech, but because of the time difference.

Every day I did a virtual writing sprint with my friend Charles, starting Tuesday morning at 6:30 am Tokyo time - which is 2:30 pm Monday in LA, where he lives. On Monday, he asked me how Tuesday was. "You'll see," I said. "It's coming for you." And I delighted in my prescience, because Tuesday did indeed come for him.

Now that I'm back in LA, I feel less all-knowing and more like I'm playing catch up (probably because I didn't check my email for nine calendar days). But even though my inbox is a mess, I'm psyched to drop into yours with some truly dope and timely art by dope and timely artists.

Whether time's moving too fast for you, or not fast enough, these recs will help you settle in and actually appreciate the time you have. Please silence that super-annoying alarm on your phone, and enjoy.

With love,

Adrienne xx

MOVIE: PALM SPRINGS (2020)

There’s nothing like being stuck in the same day over and over again to make it clear what your patterns are and why they’re slowly degrading your soul. When I was trapped in my apartment during COVID - living the same day over and over again - Palm Springs felt like a revelation. And five years later, it holds up.

A guy (Andy Samberg) is trapped in the same Palm Springs wedding over and over, and he’s given up on ever getting out. Enter a girl (Cristin Milioti), a chaotic mess of messy patterns and bullshit and tenacity. Their dynamic alone makes the movie worthwhile. Sci-fi is rarely both irreverent and hopeful, and for those looking for a rom-com that goes deeper than will-they-end-up-together AND actually makes you laugh out loud AND makes you think… highly recommend. - Adrienne

TV: DARK (2017)

I have never said this in my life, but this show f*cks.

It’s a sad dad story, wrapped in a missing kid story, wrapped in a corporate power struggle, wrapped in an ever folding in on itself time bending puzzle that Actually Makes Sense In The End.

I cannot stress how astoundingly this TV show about a small German town with a big secret expands and expands in scope and yet never degrades in quality, in family tree mind trips and 80’s haircuts so good you can smell the gel through the screen. You think the young version/older version casting in Yellowjackets is good? Respectfully it’s really only Shauna and Shauna SUCKS now so please grow up (with love).

Dark makes you lean forward til you fall into the screen, and sit back to think your big thoughts about who we are, what we owe each other, and the sins of our fathers. Watching Dark is getting lost in a world you feel like you’ve known forever. Perhaps, maybe you have? -Dara

PHOTO-NOVEL: LA JETÉE (1962)

“This is the story of a man, marked by an image from his childhood.”

My youngest brother got married a few weeks ago. It was a lovely moment in time - a gathering of 97% of my living extended family. I was brought to tears throughout the weekend, as I witnessed my brother, whose existence I remember a before, enter into a beautiful new season of his life as my elders reach into the later and last seasons of theirs…time collapsed in on itself and I became a man, marked by images from my childhood.

In 27 minutes, Chris Marker, in his foundation work of sci-fi, La Jetée, tells a beautiful and haunting tale of love, memory and what is lost to time. I’m not going to tell you anything about the plot, I would just ask that you spare a few minutes. With references to Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and its evident influence on Christopher Nolan, from Memento to Inception to Interstellar…Chris Marker is one of the most influential voices in storytelling, you may have never heard of.
